We were recently asked to assist one of our favorite clients to add some finishing touches to her restored farmhouse. The goal was to update the upholstery and add privacy at the windows by adding child-safe custom Roman shades. We were delighted to use our drapery, Roman shade, and upholstery skills to bring her vision to life.

Step 1: Design Concept
Using the old barn wood planks in the interior as the inspiration for the color palette, we were able to find some beautiful reds, taupes, and cream fabrics in various textures to complete the look throughout the space. Simple linen polyester blend fabrics from Trend were used for the Roman shades and the Ripplefold drapery in the guest room (photo above). We also incorporated tape trim from both Trend and Stout Brothers to add a little color via inset banding on the window treatments.
In the loft area, we upholstered a new cushion for the vintage Jenny Lind daybed (photo below) in a nubby cream performance fabric from Kravet. In the same area, we used a herringbone performance fabric from Duralee to reupholster this vintage chair. To top the design off, we used leftover fabric and trim and put our creative juices to work fabricate an array of comfortable pillows to complete the loft design.
A little fun fact about performance fabric- it withstands repeated use (will last for decades) and repels stains (even red wine)!

Step 2: Fabrication in Our Workroom
This project took place in two stages. We completed the reupholstery first to set the stage for the remainder of the project. As the home renovations were completed, we stepped in and measured for the window treatments which were to be installed before a planned family gathering. Delays and backorders aside we were able to complete it with a day to spare!

Step 3: Delivery and Installation
We delivered items and installed them in about four hours. The walls, covered in reclaimed barn wood, made it easy to install because we did not have to try and find studs for the operable drapery in the guest room (bottom left). The treatments and upholstered pieces were the perfect finishing touches to the home. The clients had quite an amazing vision for this space from the very beginning. I just loved the creative use of materials in their bathroom (bottom right).
Not to mention, it was so fun to hear the positive feedback from various family members about the project while we were installing. We are not used to such a large audience!
